Suburban Philadelphia ice cream shop owner Bob Gerenser, 56, believes global warming is based on faulty science and calls Earth Hour "nonsense." The resident of New Hope, Pa., and owner of Gerenser's Exotic Ice Cream planned to illuminate his store with extra theatrical lighting. "I'm going to get everyone I know in my neighborhood to turn on every light they possibly can to waste as much electricity as possible to underline the absurdity of this action ... by being absurd," he said. |

Never have what you wnat
by wondering on February 9th, 2009 on Parma Pizza |
| Every time I try to order from this Parma Pizza they never have what I ask for. It's were out of wings, we shut the fryer off at 7:30 even though they are open until 9:30. Who does business that way, obviously they don't want to stay open. |
Identity Crisis-Full Review
by Annie on February 9th, 2009 on Le Bistro Cafe |
| Le Bistro, a name that alludes to culture, sophistication and upper scale cuisine. After recently dining at the downtown Altoona restaurant I soon realized that the name is very deceiving. I was expecting a modern bistro style restaurant, selling gourmet soups and sandwiches for lunch, experimenting with foods and tastes not common for the typical Altoona palate. Upon entering the newly renovated restaurant space I immediately noticed the plastic table clothes reminding me of a summertime picnic. We were promptly greeted by the host who was extremely friendly and grateful that we decided to try out their new restaurant. Because we were the only patrons dining in the restaurant I soon understood his appreciation. After our drink orders, we decided on an appetizer. “Carnidito” which is cooked asparagus tips wrapped in a thinly sliced piece of beef tenderloin. With a name and description that seemed promising I was to say the least disappointed when served this dull presentation. I dipped the morsel in a horseradish sauce that accompanied, and my initial impression was “it’s palatable.” The beef being cooked to leather made for a chewy starter. After the appetizer we ordered our entrée. With less than appetizing or gourmet menu names like the “Stuffer” I was disappointed to see that there was nothing on the menu pushing the culinary envelope. The ingredients, meals and sides have all been done before at any other Central Pennsylvania deli or lunch time restaurant. I ordered their signature “Stuffer” after being informed by the waiter that it was an original menu item and it was made with their freshly made ciabatta bread. The Stuffer is essentially a glorified sandwich melt. Basically it’s the sandwich ingredients stuffed in half a ciabatta roll then cheese is melted inside making for a slightly original lunch time sandwich. I was pleased with the portion and with the sandwich overall, but not with the price. Small changes to this sandwich, like using a feta or goat cheese in the sandwich, could have created a flavorful dish worth the $7.99 price. It came with a very small 4oz portion of potato salad which lacked any flavor at all, I’ve had better from Wal Mart’s deli counter. Last we ordered dessert after we noticed advertising for their fresh and daily made desserts on their menu. The waiter rattled off what they had available in house. I asked if the baklavah was made in house, which he said “No we actually buy that.” So I decided to order some chocolate cake thinking that might have been made in house. As the waiter walked back towards the kitchen we saw him bring out a boxed chocolate cake and put a slice on a plate. So much for the fresh and daily made desserts. Overall my experience at Le Bistro was nothing interesting or new but the same old overvalued deli menu. There were no ingredients that struck me or entrees that surprised. It seems to have a serious problem of identity crisis because of the mix gourmet aspirations and predictable fare. Restaurants need to pick a category of dining and stick to it. I think I could have had the same meal at Applebee’s and at least there would have been the company of other diners. |
Classic hidden gem!!
by steven on February 7th, 2009 on Pike Cafe |
| Being new to the area, I've heard alot about the Pike from my colleagues and am so glad my wife and I have finally made it in to our new favorite spot!! It's not pretentious, over-priced, and everyone there, from the staff to the customers, made us feel very relaxed. We are from a much bigger city, and this place made us feel like we were in one of the hippest places where we came from. The food was alot more than we expected from a locally owned establishment. But after meeting the owner, we really loved the whole experience even more!! They really love to please you here and we will definately be back and alot of our friends have said the same as they have come here too!! |
