MS Restaurant Reviews & Comments:
*****  Pavoni's is a sham
by Unhappy Customer on February 15th, 2009
on Pavoni's
THIS PLACE IS A SHAM! DO NOT GO HERE.

We paid $317 (including tip, not including the wine we brought in) for mediocre, at best, food. You can get the same thing at the Olive Garden for about 1/4 of the price (take that for what it means to you).

It is trying to be fancy and mysterious. You must make reservations, you must where a coat and tie, and, apparently, you must be willing to devote your entire evening to sitting around this "restaurant" waiting on their food. When you have a set-up like that, it arouses certain expectations....one expects it to be out of this world phenomenal food. This place let us down like none other.

We were supposed to get 16 courses. We waited over an hour to even be served the first course. We left after six courses because we were so disappointed in the food. We were charged $267 dollars. We had been served 4 cold, fried shrimp that were of Captain D's quality, we had been served pasta that tasted like it was the Kroger brand off the shelf, we had been served soup that was supposedly oyster but just tasted like salt, we had eaten some bread pudding with mushrooms, which was pretty ok, not worth $130, we had been served a pastry thing that my husband thought had salmon in it, but it was cheese. This was not a meal that should have set us back over $300 (closer to $400 if you include the wine we brought in).

When we left, they knew we were upset. They begged us to come back, but they charged us a ridiculous amount for what we had, and for how unhappy we were. The fried shrimp were cold! You can't do that, no matter how busy you are. For that alone, everyone should have had part of their meal comped. It is a bad, bad business practice to not make it right with the customer. No other restaurant of this supposed caliber in the area would have let us leave like they did.

I understand that they were, for them, extraordinarily busy that night, and I can allow that such a fact might explain some of the poor service. It might explain the wait, even some of the cold food. However, the food, despite all that, WAS NOT GOOD. It wasn't good. It is chain restaurant quality at premium prices. We left because of the food, not that they were busy. The busy thing does NOT explain the poor food quality.

We could have had a wonderful, delicious dinner, not holding back and getting anything we so desired, at Shapley's, at Ely's, at Walker's, at Bravo, at Char, at Bon Ami, at Olga's......I wish, wish, wish we had given them our business instead of this joke of a place.

We think it might be a sham for a number of reasons:

1) They kept bragging on all these techniques the chef had employed in making the pastas. This was a lie - it wasn't homemade pasta. I have had homemade pasta, my husband has had homemade pasta, we make homemade pasta, this was not that. The same thing goes for all their goings-ons about the pastries, etc.

2) When we made our reservation, or put in for our reservation on-line, my husband got a text back (a few hours later) that said, "Congratulations, you have been randomly selected out of the 324 requests for a seat at Pavoni's at six thirty." When we got there, we were told that "over 600 people had requested to be at this dinner." Now, maybe 300 people had indeed inquired about the restaurant in the week btwn us putting in our reservation and the actual meal....or maybe they are exaggerating (or even lying).

3) The waiter kept referring to the chef as a woman, yet the owner/manager kept referring to the chef as a man. Which is it? Why is it that complicated? I also think there may be some fudging going on about the owner's background.

My husband and I both woke up with the same conclusion this morning: the place is a sham. I am unsure if they simply don't know what good food is, what it tastes like, or if it is an elaborate ruse designed to trick naive customers with some extra cash into thinking they are having a "fine dining" meal when what they are actually eating is Cisco, Ronco, and Prego. All I know is....this place is the worst in the Jackson area for the quality versus the price.

I have never seen my husband as angry as he was last night when we left this place, and I recommend any restaurant in the metro area over this one - including Whataburger.
*****  Poor
by Bob on February 10th, 2009
on Mikey's on the Bayou
My wife and I visited Mikey's recently while on vacation, and found it to be below average at best. The quantities are small, the quality poor, and the prices high. I was asked how the food was as we were leaving, and I honestly told them, but nothing was done to make it better. My wife had salisbury steak, and she said it tasted like it was right out of a TV dinner. After tasting her dinner, I concurred. There are numerous excellent restaraunts in Ocean Springs, with good quality and prices, so avoid Mikey's on the Bayou (McElroy's on the Bayou is a much better choice).
*****  best home-cooking in Olive Branch!
by Scott Merrill on January 21st, 2009
on Brown Bag Cafe
I absolutely love the Brown Bag - the owner, Judy, takes care of you from the minute you hit the door. Some of the best home cooking I've ever had. I try to stop by at least once a day, even if just to sit and have coffee, chatting about the day - what a great place to eat and relax.

...stop by and ask for the "Judy Burger" - you won't regret it!!!
